What is viral?
Viral describes a social media post that spreads very quickly and widely, being shared and viewed far beyond the creator's usual audience.
Going viral can bring a sudden wave of attention, new followers and sometimes sales. But it is unpredictable and rarely something you can plan. Viral attention can also be negative, so it matters what kind of content takes off.
Content often goes viral when it is surprising, funny, emotional or very useful, and when it is easy to share. Algorithms on TikTok, Instagram, X and other networks can push a post to huge audiences if early viewers engage strongly. Shares in private messages also play a big part.
Focus on making consistently good content rather than chasing virality. If a post does take off, be ready: update your bio, pin related posts and reply to comments. Use the attention to guide people toward something lasting, like following you or joining your email list.
Example
A small candle company's video about a customer's heartfelt gift went viral, bringing thousands of new followers overnight.
