What is short-form video?
Short-form video is brief video content, usually under a few minutes, made to be watched quickly on mobile feeds like TikTok, Reels and YouTube Shorts.
Short videos are now central to how many people use social media. They are easy to watch, easy to share and often favored by algorithms, which helps new or small accounts get discovered. For businesses, they are a quick way to show products, personality and expertise.
The main short video formats include TikTok videos, Instagram and Facebook Reels and YouTube Shorts. LinkedIn, Pinterest and X also support short videos. Each network sets its own length limits, and these change over time. Most short videos are vertical and designed to be watched full screen.
Hook viewers in the first second or two. Keep one clear idea per video. Use on-screen text for people watching without sound. Film in good light, and do not worry about perfect production. Reuse the same video across networks, adjusting captions and hashtags for each one.
Example
A hardware store films quick fix-it tips, like how to stop a squeaky door, and posts them as short videos each week.
