What is reply?

A reply is a response to a comment, message or post, written directly beneath it or in a private conversation, to continue the discussion.

Replies show that a real person is behind your account. When businesses answer questions and thank people, followers feel heard and are more likely to come back. Replies also help keep conversations going, which can signal to algorithms that your content is worth showing.

Every network supports replies, though the format varies. On Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube you reply under comments. On X, Threads and Bluesky, replies form a thread beneath a post. On LinkedIn, you reply within comment threads. Direct messages have their own reply flow. Some networks let you reply with video or images.

Reply quickly, especially to questions and complaints. Use the person's name and avoid copy-and-paste answers when you can. Move sensitive issues to private messages. Set aside a regular time each day to check and answer replies so nothing slips through.

Example

A bakery owner replies to every comment on her new menu post, answering questions about gluten-free options.
