What is geotag?

A geotag is a location label added to a social media post, photo or video, showing where it was taken or what place it is about.

Geotags help local customers find you. When people browse posts from a specific city, neighborhood or venue, geotagged content can appear in front of them. For businesses with a physical location, it is an easy way to connect online posts with real-world visits.

Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and some other networks let you add a location when posting. Tapping the location often shows other posts from the same place, which can include photos from your customers. Businesses can also make sure their own location appears correctly when people search for it.

Tag your exact business location on posts taken there, and tag event venues or neighborhoods for posts elsewhere. Encourage customers to tag your location when they post. Be thoughtful about privacy: avoid geotagging homes or sharing real-time locations of staff or customers.

Example

A rooftop restaurant geotags every sunset photo it posts so tourists browsing the area's location page can discover it.
