What is tagging?
Tagging is adding another account, product or location to a social post so it is linked, and the tagged account is usually notified.
Tagging connects your content to people and places. When you tag a customer, partner or creator, they may share your post with their followers. Product and location tags help people discover what you sell and where to find you.
On Instagram and Facebook, you can tag people directly on photos, as well as mention them in captions. LinkedIn, X, Threads, TikTok and Bluesky support tagging through mentions. Some networks also allow product tags linked to a shop and location tags that place your post on a map. Tagged accounts can often remove tags they do not want.
Only tag accounts that are actually part of the content. Ask before tagging customers in photos. Tag your location on local posts so nearby people can find you. Avoid tagging large accounts just to get attention, since it often looks like spam.
Example
A florist tags the wedding venue and the couple's photographer when sharing photos of her bridal bouquets.
