What is mention?

A mention is when someone tags an account in a post, comment or story using the @ symbol and the account's handle, which usually sends that account a notification.

Mentions are one of the most direct ways people talk to or about your business. Each one is a chance to thank a fan, answer a question or fix a problem before it grows. Mentioning others can also put your post in front of their followers.

On Instagram, X, Threads, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok and Bluesky, you type @ followed by the handle and pick the account from a list. The person mentioned usually gets an alert, and on some networks the post may also appear on their profile. Untagged talk about your brand does not trigger an alert, so you only see it if you search for it.

Check your mentions daily and reply to as many as you reasonably can. Mention partners, suppliers or customers when you share content involving them, but only when it is relevant. Avoid mentioning big accounts just to get attention, as it often looks spammy.

Example

A coffee shop mentions the local farm that supplies its milk whenever it posts a new seasonal drink.
