A social media marketing strategy is a written plan for what you post, where, how often and why, with numbers that tell you whether it is working. You can build a good one in an afternoon with the 7 steps below. The template at the end fits on one page, and a one-page plan you follow beats a 30-page deck nobody reads.
Step 1: Pick one business goal and two numbers
Start with what the business needs, not with followers. Pick one goal for the next 90 days:
- More sales or bookings: measure link clicks and sales from social.
- More enquiries: measure messages, calls and form fills from social.
- More awareness: measure reach and follower growth.
- Keeping customers: measure engagement and replies.
Write it with numbers and a date: "Get 40 bookings from Instagram and Facebook by 31 March." Our social media KPIs guide lists which number goes with which goal.
Step 2: Describe the people you want to reach
Write 3 to 5 lines about your best customers: who they are, what they worry about, what they search for and where they spend time online. Your best source is your own customers: ask the last ten why they bought.
Step 3: Choose 2 or 3 networks, not all of them
Go where those customers already are:
- Instagram and TikTok for consumer products, food, beauty, fitness and anything visual;
- Facebook for local businesses and audiences over 35;
- LinkedIn for business-to-business services and recruiting;
- YouTube for anything people search "how to" for;
- Pinterest for home, fashion, recipes and planning;
- Threads, Bluesky, Telegram and WhatsApp to reach followers directly with less competition.
Doing two networks well beats doing six badly. Add more once the first ones run smoothly.
Step 4: Set 3 to 5 content pillars
Content pillars are the topics you post about again and again. For a dental clinic: patient questions, behind the scenes, before and after, offers and team. Plan roughly:
- 70% useful or entertaining posts (tips, answers, stories);
- 20% posts that show who you are (team, process, customers);
- 10% direct offers.
Not sure what to post? Our templates library has ready-made post ideas, and the AI post generator turns a topic into drafts for each network.
Step 5: Set a posting schedule you can keep
Consistency matters more than volume. A realistic start for a small team:
| Network | Posts per week |
|---|---|
| 3 feed posts or Reels, plus Stories | |
| 3 | |
| 2 to 3 | |
| TikTok | 3 |
Batch the work: write and schedule a week of posts in one sitting. Our guides to the best time to post and a social media content calendar cover timing and planning.
Step 6: Measure every week, decide every month
Each week, note the two numbers from Step 1 and your three best and three worst posts. Each month, ask:
- Which pillar gets the most engagement and the most clicks?
- Which format works best (Reels, carousels, text)?
- What should we do more of, and what should we stop?
The free engagement rate calculator gives you a number you can compare month to month.
Step 7: Review every 90 days
Every quarter, run a short social media audit, check the goal, and rewrite the plan. Strategies go stale; reviews keep them honest.
