What is emoji?

An emoji is a small digital picture or symbol, such as a smiling face, heart or thumbs up, used in messages and posts to express emotions or ideas.

Emojis add personality and warmth to written content. A well-placed emoji can make a caption feel friendlier, help break up long text, or draw the eye to an important point. They are also a quick way for followers to react to your posts.

Emojis work across nearly every social network, but they can look slightly different depending on the device and app. Screen readers read emojis aloud by name, so a long row of them can be tiring for people using assistive technology. Some networks count emojis differently toward character limits.

Use emojis that fit your brand voice and audience. A playful café might use them often, while a law firm might use them rarely. Place them at the end of sentences rather than in place of key words, and avoid emojis whose meaning might be unclear or misread.

Example

A smoothie shop starts each caption with a single fruit emoji that matches the drink of the day, like a strawberry for its berry blend.
