What is brand voice?

Brand voice is the consistent personality and style a business uses in its words, such as friendly, expert or playful, across posts, replies and messages.

A clear brand voice makes your business feel familiar and trustworthy. When your captions, replies and stories all sound like the same person, followers get to know you. It also helps you stand out from competitors who sell similar things but sound bland or generic.

Your voice should stay the same across networks, but your tone can adjust. You might be a little more formal on LinkedIn, more relaxed on Instagram and more playful on TikTok, while still sounding like you. Replies to complaints usually call for a calmer, more caring tone than celebratory posts.

Write down three or four words that describe how you want to sound, plus a few words or phrases you always or never use. Share these notes with anyone who posts for you. When using AI tools to draft captions, edit the results so they match your voice.

Example

A children's bookstore uses warm, playful language and gentle puns in every caption and reply to match its cozy shop.
