What is A/B testing?

A/B testing is a way of comparing two versions of a post, ad or page by showing each to similar people and seeing which one performs better.

A/B testing takes the guesswork out of social media decisions. Instead of arguing about which headline, image or caption is best, you let your audience decide. Over time, small wins from testing add up to content that reliably gets more clicks, replies and sales.

The idea is simple: change one thing at a time, such as the image, the first line or the call to action, and keep everything else the same. Ad tools on networks like Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn often have built-in split testing. For organic posts, you can test informally by posting two variations at similar times on different days and comparing results.

Decide what success means before you start, whether that is clicks, saves or comments. Give each version enough time and views to produce a fair result, and write down what you learn so the next test builds on the last one.

Example

A local yoga studio posts the same class offer twice, once with a photo of the room and once with a short video, to see which version drives more bookings.
