What is watch time?
Watch time is the total amount of time people spend viewing your videos, often used by networks to judge how engaging the content is.
Watch time shows whether people actually watch your videos, not just click on them. Networks like YouTube and TikTok use it as a strong signal when deciding what to recommend. Videos that keep people watching are more likely to be shown to new audiences.
Watch time is usually reported alongside related numbers, such as average view duration and retention, which show where viewers drop off. YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn all provide some form of watch time data in their analytics, though they measure it in different ways.
Open with a strong hook so viewers stay past the first few seconds. Cut slow sections and get to the point. Use on-screen text and clear structure to keep attention. Check retention graphs to see where people leave, and adjust future videos to fix those moments.
Example
A tutoring center noticed viewers left its videos during long introductions, so it started jumping straight into the lesson.
