What is social listening?

Social listening is tracking public online conversations about your brand, competitors, industry or keywords to understand what people are saying and feeling.

Social listening goes beyond the comments and mentions you get directly. It helps you find conversations where you are not tagged, spot trends, discover customer frustrations and see how people talk about your competitors. These insights can shape your content, products and service.

Listening is usually done with specialized tools that search public posts on networks, forums, blogs and news sites for chosen keywords. You can also do simple listening by hand, using the search features on X, Threads, Bluesky, TikTok and others. What can be tracked depends on each network's rules and privacy settings.

Start with a short list of keywords: your brand name, common misspellings, product names and key industry terms. Look for patterns rather than single posts. Use what you learn to answer questions publicly, improve your offers and plan content that addresses real customer needs.

Example

A small furniture maker searches for phrases like wobbly desk and finds people complaining, which inspires a post on sturdy home office setups.
