What is dark social?
Dark social is content sharing that happens in private channels, such as messaging apps, email or direct messages, where analytics tools cannot easily see where traffic came from.
Much of the sharing that drives real interest happens out of sight. When someone copies your link into a group chat or sends your post to a friend in a direct message, it can lead to visits and sales that your reports never connect back to social media.
Common dark social channels include WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, Instagram and TikTok DMs, Slack, text messages and email. In website analytics, this traffic often shows up as "direct" because the original source is hidden. Some networks show how many times a post was sent or shared privately, which gives a partial picture.
Make your content easy to share privately by including useful tips, offers or news worth sending to a friend. Add share buttons to your website, and ask new customers where they heard about you. Tracking links can also help reveal hidden sources.
Example
A neighborhood restaurant learns from customer conversations that most new diners first saw its menu photos shared in local WhatsApp groups.
