Two large 2026 studies agree on the broad pattern: midweek is the strongest time to post on Instagram, with Wednesday standing out, and weekends are the weakest. Sprout Social's data points to weekday afternoons, roughly 12–7pm in your audience's local time, while Buffer's data puts its single best slot at Thursday 9am. Use these as starting points, then check your own Instagram insights and run a short test, because your followers may not behave like the average account.

## Key takeaways

- Sprout Social's March 2026 study found Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons gave the highest peak engagement, and Saturday was the lowest day.
- Buffer's September 2026 analysis of 9.6 million Instagram posts ranked Thursday 9am, Wednesday 12pm and Wednesday 6pm as the top three slots.
- Both studies rank midweek highly and weekends (or late week) poorly.
- All times are in your audience's local time, not yours.
- Your own follower activity data in Instagram insights beats any average. Test two slots for four weeks and compare engagement rate.

## Where the data comes from

We only use timing data from named, published studies that state how they were done. For Instagram in 2026 we found two.

**Sprout Social.** [Sprout Social's best times to post on Instagram](https://sproutsocial.com/insights/best-times-to-post-on-instagram/) was published in March 2026. According to its methodology, it analyzed nearly 2 billion engagements across roughly 307,000 social profiles belonging to more than 30,000 Sprout Social customers, across six networks. The data was collected between November 27, 2025 and February 27, 2026, and all times are in each audience's local time.

**Buffer.** [Buffer's best time to post on Instagram](https://buffer.com/resources/when-is-the-best-time-to-post-on-instagram) was published in September 2026. It looked at 9.6 million Instagram posts sent through Buffer from more than 200,000 accounts, between January 2024 and December 2025. Buffer ranked time slots by median engagement rate, calculated as likes, comments, shares and saves divided by followers, and normalized times so they apply in any local time zone.

The two studies use different samples, periods and measures, so it is not surprising that their exact hours differ. Where they agree is the more reliable signal.

## Best times to post on Instagram in 2026

### Sprout Social: weekday afternoons

According to Sprout Social's 2026 data, these were the best times to post on Instagram (local time):

| Day | Best times (local) |
|---|---|
| Monday | 2–4pm |
| Tuesday | 1–7pm |
| Wednesday | 12–9pm (plus 11pm) |
| Thursday | 12–2pm |
| Friday | No significant peak |
| Saturday and Sunday | Lowest engagement |

Sprout says Tuesdays and Wednesdays consistently show the highest peak engagement. It names Saturday as the lowest day overall and describes early morning, 3–7am, as a "dead zone."

### Buffer: Wednesday is the best day

According to Buffer's 2026 analysis, the top three slots were:

1. Thursday at 9am
2. Wednesday at 12pm
3. Wednesday at 6pm

Buffer found Wednesday was the best day overall, followed by Thursday and Tuesday. It ranked Friday and Saturday as the weakest days and the hours from 1am to 5am as the worst times on any day.

### Where the studies agree and disagree

Both studies put the middle of the week on top and the end of the week or weekend at the bottom. Both list Wednesday at midday as strong. The difference is mornings: Sprout's windows start at noon, while Buffer's top slot is Thursday at 9am. If your audience checks Instagram before work, a morning slot is worth testing alongside an afternoon one.

### Industry windows from Sprout Social

Sprout also published windows by industry. A few examples (local time):

| Industry | Best times (local) |
|---|---|
| Computer software and tech | Mon 11am–1pm and 3pm; Tue 11am–4pm; Wed–Thu 11am–3pm; Fri 11am–2pm |
| Food and beverage | Mon 11am–6pm; Tue 11am–4pm; Wed 11am–2pm; Thu–Fri 11am–1pm |
| Retail | Mon 12–3pm; Tue 12–4pm; Wed 12–3pm; Thu 11am–5pm; Fri 12–3pm |
| Travel and hospitality | Mon–Tue 11am–4pm; Wed 10am–4pm; Thu 1–3pm; Fri 12pm and 2pm |

Weekends were the weakest days for all four. See the [Sprout Social page](https://sproutsocial.com/insights/best-times-to-post-on-instagram/) for the full list.

## Does timing matter for Reels?

Neither study gives separate times for Reels in the figures quoted above. Instagram ranks Reels largely by predicted interest, and a Reel can keep gaining views for days, so timing mostly affects how fast it collects its first reactions. Treat Reels like any other post: test an afternoon slot against a morning or evening one and compare results. Our [Instagram Reels strategy guide](/blog/instagram-reels-strategy) and [Instagram algorithm guide](/blog/instagram-algorithm) cover what drives reach beyond timing.

## How to find your own best time to post on Instagram

### Step 1: Check when your followers are online

Professional accounts can see follower activity in [Instagram insights](https://help.instagram.com/iphone-app/788388387972460). At the time of writing, the followers section shows the days and hours when your followers are most active. Menu names change, so look for the followers or audience section in the current app. Note the two or three busiest windows.

### Step 2: Pick two candidate slots

Compare your busiest windows with the studies above. If your data and the studies overlap, for example Wednesday at noon, make that slot A. Pick a different slot your data supports, such as Thursday at 9am or Tuesday at 6pm, as slot B.

### Step 3: Run a four-week test

1. Post in slot A in weeks 1 and 3, and in slot B in weeks 2 and 4.
2. Keep the content type and quality as similar as you can (for example, one carousel and one Reel each week).
3. Schedule the posts in advance so they go out exactly on time.
4. Record reach, engagements and engagement rate for each post in a spreadsheet.

### Step 4: Judge by engagement rate, not likes

Reach changes from post to post, so raw likes can mislead you. Divide engagements by reach and compare the average for each slot. Our [engagement rate](/social-media-terms/engagement-rate) definition explains the options, and the free [Instagram engagement rate calculator](/tools/instagram-engagement-rate-calculator) does the math for you.

| Week | Slot | Reach | Engagements | Engagement rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A: Wed 12pm | 1,600 | 72 | 4.5% |
| 2 | B: Thu 9am | 1,750 | 70 | 4.0% |
| 3 | A: Wed 12pm | 1,580 | 76 | 4.8% |
| 4 | B: Thu 9am | 1,820 | 69 | 3.8% |

*Example figures for illustration only.*

Small gaps over only four posts can be noise. If the result is close, keep testing for another four weeks before changing your schedule. Repeat the test every quarter, because audiences shift with seasons and app changes.
